December 21-23

I hope you have a wonderful break full of family, friends, rest, and laughs.
See you next year!

Upcoming events:
  • December 24-January 1: No School--Enjoy your break!
What’s happening in Kindergarten this week?

Reading: We will have our Super Reader celebration this week! Kindergartners will create a cape to show that they really are Super Readers! They will build sight word towers to knock down! Swat at letters to match a sound! Read with other Super Readers! It will be a day to celebrate how far we have come as readers!
**We will not be bringing book bags home over break.

Writing: Writers will publish a true story this week. Writers will bring all of their writing home on Tuesday! Ask your child to read their stories to you by pointing under their words and checking the pictures to remember what their story was about.

Math: We will work on adding and subtracting this week using a variety of tools. Keep asking your child math story problems over break! We encourage students to see math everywhere.

Word Study: Check the sight word link below as a reminder of the sight words your child can be searching for and spelling with you!

Science: The Kindergartners will continue to work in different science centers to wrap up the unit. They will work in the following centers:
  • Scientists will match body coverings to the correct animal
  • Students will  create their own animals using stencils, body coverings paper and other art supplies
  • Students will sort animals into different groups based on color, body covering, number of legs, etc.

December 14-18

I can't believe this is the last full week of school before our winter break! Times flies when you're having fun and learning lots:)

There will be a sub in our room on Tuesday morning since the teachers have a full day of collaboration meetings.

Upcoming events:
  • December 15th: Half Day
  • December 24-January 1: No School--Enjoy your break!
What’s happening in Kindergarten this week?

Reading: Kindergarten readers have gained so many skills and so much confidence when reading their books. This week, readers will talk more about their books by "adding a pinch of you". This could mean commenting on the pictures or making other connections with the book. The Kindergartners will be reminded to 'warm up a book' by looking closely at the pictures to help figure out tricky words and searching for sight words to help you read them quickly!

*Your child may have brought home a special book to read to a special someone! In order to celebrate our reading growth, we talked about sharing the gift of reading with others. Enjoy:)

Writing: As students learn more and more about writing stories and revising, they will go back to add more to old stories. We are beginning to add “flaps” when we run out of room to write on the original page. Students will explore familiar books to notice how the authors put a lead, or beginning, in their stories. Then they will try it. Finally, partners will work together to find gaps in their stories and fill them to get ready for publishing next week!

Math:

We will continue to work with teen numbers, partner numbers, and 10 groups.

  • Students will create a book showing all the partners of each number. (i.e. the partners of 2 are 1+1 and 2+0)
  • Mathematicians will use marbles and break apart sticks to explore partner numbers 1-10.
  • At a listening center, students will hear “what if” adding and subtraction problems. They will use manipulatives to solve the problem. For example, there are 5 snowmen outside. What if the sun melts 2 of them?
  • We will practice adding and subtracting fluently within 5.

Word Study:  Students will learn the words one, two, & three this week! Students will continue to learn these sight words as you search for them in books, or wherever else they might find them!

Science: The Kindergartners have learned so much about mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. We will work on different culminating activities to wrap up the unit! Scientists will match body coverings to the correct animal, create their own animals, and explore animal body coverings with magnifying glasses.
Kindergartners from Room 82!
Check out these amazing authors!
On Friday afternoon we played a game called Spiders and Flies with the other Kindergarten class. It was such a fun brain break!

December 7-11

We have exciting news! A new student will be joining our class on Tuesday. We look forward to welcoming him into our room. The rest of the bunch is eager to help out and learn more about our new friend!

Upcoming events:
  • December 10th: Family Night 5:30-7:00
  • December 15th: Half Day
What’s happening in Kindergarten this week?

Reading:The kindergartners LOVE to bring their books home! As you may have noticed in many of the books that are being sent home, there is a pattern that is carried throughout the book. When reading with your child, give them the pattern by reading the first page, then ask them to continue the pattern through the rest of the book. Remember to encourage using pointer power, snap word power, and picture power as they read!

**Please send the book bag back to school every day to exchange the books!

Writing: This week, writers will continue to work on adding sounds to words, creating detailed pictures, and adding beginnings to stories. As students write, they are working so hard to stretch out words focusing on the vowels in the middle, put sight words down quickly, and remember spaces. This is some hard work! We are excited to share it with you this week at Family Night. If you are unable to attend, I will send their work home for you to see!

Math:
We begin Unit 3 this week, which focuses on identifying 10 groups in teen numbers, finding partners of a number (i.e. partners of 5 are 3+2 and 4+1), and addition and subtraction. Students will learn about identifying 10 groups with a ten bug (ladybug)
  • Identify groups of objects and state the partner numbers
  • Students will have 10 buttons and a box. They will remove or add buttons to tell an addition or subtraction story. Then, they can write the equation.
  • Create a ten bug & do a hunt around the room for 10 groups in teen numbers
  • Foam 10 frame teen number building

Word Study:  We will continue to work with the words come, look, like, my, & to. It is helpful to draw the words in the air, describe the shape of the word (look has two tall letters and two short letters), and search for them in print. This helps the words stick!

Here is an ongoing list of our sight words: http://kindergartenroom82.blogspot.com/p/our-sight-words.html

Science: Scientists will investigate reptiles, scales, and amphibians! We will read books about snakes, toads, frogs, and more. Scientists will create charts to compare the animals and discuss the purpose of the different body coverings.
