What’s happening in Kindergarten this week?

Reading: Readers are flexible problem solvers. When we get to a tricky word, here are some things we try:

Writing:  After sharing so much how to knowledge, the writers are going to start sharing their opinions! We will start with a “Buffer Day”. We use these days to introduce our new genre to the students. Together, we will write an opinion piece as a class. We will talk specifically about writing opinion letters and students will write letters about their opinion on things that should be changed in our room.

Math: We will wrap up the math centers from last week and take our unit 3 assessment on Thursday.
  • Students will use a Math Expressions activity page to practice shape recognition and position words.
  • We will build teen numbers with real objects.
  • Students will play go fish with teen number cards (14 and 10+4 would be a match).
  • Students will challenge each other’s’ adding and subtracting skills by showing a partner a number of chips. Then, they will cover some of the chips with a cup. The partner will need to look at the pieces remaining to determine the number of chips under the cup. This is a great way to practice number sequencing and number sense!
Word Study: Our new sight words are with, new, away, down, & do.

Here are our sight words.

Science: Scientists took impressive notes as they studied wood samples and sinking last week. I am anxious to see how their work in their science journals continues. This week, the focus is on changing wood. We will sand wood pieces and create sawdust sculptures.

Check out our tasty writing celebration!
Peanut butter and Jelly was awesome!
