What’s happening in Kindergarten this week?

Reading: Readers are learning SO much from their books! These high interest books are really pushing their reading to the next level too!  Readers will pay close attention to the "expert words" in their books this week. They will work on figuring out what new vocabulary words mean by checking the picture and putting the information in the words and pictures together to figure out what the page is trying to say. At the end of the week, we will talk about bringing books to life by acting out using a voice to match the words and gestures when reading.

Writing:  This week we are starting to write All About books. Students will begin to keep a ‘tiny topics’ notebook where they can jot down ideas about topics they want to write about. We will discuss thinking about and planning out how we can teach our readers the important facts about our topics. Writers will learn that they can plan out books using their fingers to keep track of their ideas. Help your writer think of different things he/she could teach others about!

Math:. We will work on adding and subtracting heavily this week. We will rotate through the following centers:
  • Each person will choose an equation. We will tell subtraction stories that match the equation.
  • Students roll dice. Then, they will use manipulatives (dinosaurs, blocks, trucks, etc.) to ‘act out’ the math stories. They will write an equation to match the story.
  • Students will find the partners of ten using a ten strip. They will create their own partners of ten chart.
  • Mathematicians will use Ipads to use an addition and subtraction app called MathBug. Students will practice adding and subtracting within 10 to build fluency.
Word Study: Our new sight words are: red, yellow, blue, then
& was

Here are our sight words.

Social Studies: We will start to build a base for our Self Study inquiry with a read aloud, video aloud, and song. Students will have whole class conversation about the book It’s Okay to be Different by Todd Parr. We will create a class book after watching a video of a poem called, “I am Me!” Here is the link to the poem. Each student will add a page that says, “No one _____ the way I ____.” Finally, we will create a self-portrait after listening to  the song “What I Am” by Will.I.Am. Here is the link to the song. I am excited for students to start thinking about what makes them special…we know they are!
