What’s happening in Kindergarten this week?

Reading: These nonfiction books are so engaging for students! They are so excited to share the page about which snakes are poisonous or how many rooms are in the White House. They are learning so much! This week, readers will learn that they can share this information with partners, almost like being a reporter! Students are encouraged to search a book for answers to their questions, point to pictures when explaining ideas or questions, and search for even more books on a topic you are interested in! Try these things at home when reading with your reader.

Writing:  Our persuasive writing is coming to a close this week. I am SO impressed with the writing they are doing! It will be exciting to share with you on Friday morning. If you are unable to attend, take a look through your child's folder with them when it comes home! This week, writers will add missing punctuation, plan and rehearse how they are going to share their writing, and fancy their piece up for publication.

Math:. We will continue to work on partners of ten this week. We will rotate through the following centers:
  • We will create teen number books to solidify student understanding of ten plus extras in a teen number.
  • Students will pick two number tiles. They will try to add the numbers and write the equation before their partner does! This will build fluency with adding numbers 1-5.
  • Students have been exploring the partners of ten using ‘bugs’ that are sleeping and awake. They will create their own books to show these representations.
  • Mathematicians will play the Minus One game. Partners will have a game board, chips, and a dice. They will roll a dice and place a chip on the number rolled minus one, anywhere on the board. They will say and write the subtraction equation.
Word Study: We will focus on punctuation as well as making sure our letters are lowercase in the middle of a sentence and uppercase only when needed. We will also continue to work with our sight words: on, are, up, an, & this.

Here are our sight words.

Science: To wrap up our science unit, students will be able to plan and create a sculpture using wood and paper materials. Scientists will use what they know about the materials to create something. After their creations are complete, students will share them with the class. This will allow students to describe what they know about wood and paper and how they used it to create their sculptures.
