What’s happening in Kindergarten this week?

Reading: We will jump back into reading by thinking about what our books are mostly about! Students will gather many books on the same topic to learn everything they can. Readers will compare books by playing the same and different game. Readers will also discuss how the pictures can teach one thing, and the words can teach another.

Writing: All About writers reread their books to make sure the information they taught is everything they wanted to say. If something is missing, they can just add on! Writers  will begin looking at mentor texts to see what else we can add to our books. We will try adding labels, diagrams, bold words, and more to make our books exciting for our audience.

Math:. Mathematicians will be getting ready for our Unit 4 test on Friday.

We will rotate through the following centers:
  • Students will explore and build 3D shapes with noodles, popsicle sticks, and playdoh.
  • Students will have a partner. Partner 1 will put some dots on a large sheet of paper using a bingo dotter. Partner 2 will then add some dots of a different color. The partners will work together to tell math stories with the dots.
  • Using a car on a large number line, students will practice adding and subtracting by pushing the cars up and down the number line ‘track’.

Word Study: Our new sight words are: red, yellow, blue, then
& was. Students have been working in short vowel sorts. This week, students are sorting words with -an, -un, and -in endings.

Here are our sight words.

Social Studies:  After learning about the new centers last week, students are eager to get started!  Here are the centers:

  • Books—Students will read All About Me books. Then they will write their own!
  • Photographs—We will sort pictures on a timeline. Then students will create their own timelines.
  • Collage—Kindergarteners will look through magazines and cut out things that represent them. They will glue these onto a poster. We will share these at closing circle.
  • Starfall.com—Students will work with partners on Ipads to “write” about themselves.
